Course Description:
This presentation will discuss the current landscape of opioid and other substance abuse related issues as they exist in Nevada today. Additionally, this course will examine the impact of legislation on opioid prescribing in Nevada. Participants will review data, discuss changes in prescribing rates and practices, review PMP laws, data errors and forgeries.
Learning Objectives:
1. Understand the scope of the opioid epidemic in Nevada
2. Discuss components of Senate Bill (SB) 459; The Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act
3. Discuss components of Assembly Bill (AB) 474; Reporting Drug Overdose
4. Discuss components of AB 239; Review and Investigation of controlled substance complaints
5. Impact of legislation on opioid prescribing in Nevada
6. Discuss the Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) changes
7. Understand PMP Issues: PMP self-queries, Data errors and forgeries, and Hotline alerts.
8. E-prescribing requirements in Nevada
Instructor Qualifications: Darla Zarley obtained her Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree from North Dakota State University. Upon graduation she worked for a local chain pharmacy as a staff pharmacist, pharmacy manager and market trainer. In 2001 Dr. Zarley joined Roseman University of Health Sciences College of Pharmacy. As the Director of Experiential Education, her responsibilities included coordinating Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience rotations for P3 students in addition to teaching pharmacy law and pharmacy calculations. On June 1, 2018, Darla Zarley began working as a Grant & Project Analyst for the Nevada State Board of Pharmacy’s Prescription Monitoring Program. Her role is to oversee the daily management of grant activities, working directly with the Prescription Monitoring Program, assisting users with registration, trouble-shooting PMP related concerns, and assisting the PMP administrators with grant related activities.
