**Full Day lecture satisfies the DEA MATE Act renewal requirements for 8 CEU’s in addition to the annual requirement for the NSBDE. Half day 4 hour credit is also available at a reduced registration fee and satisfies the annual renewal requirement for NSDE Only.
SYNOPSIS:
This eight-hour continuing education course aims to provide a comprehensive outlook on clinical pain management for dentists and a comprehensive review of the Controlled Substance Abuse Prevention Act (AB-474). The course will discuss person-focused pain management methods for successful clinical outcomes—a discussion on ethical, legal, and public health aspects of opioid use and misuse. Review the history of opioid use, culture, the myth, and the truth about opioids and provide updates on Opioid prescriptions and the Nevada Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP).
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
•Review of initiation of pain and pain pathways
•Review a Person-Centered evaluation of each person for effective pain management
•Review drug classification for pain management and the risks concerning age and general health conditions.
•From opioids to NSIDs, make an informed clinical decision
•Review CDC guidelines for prescribing opioids
•Review Nevada State opioid responses
•Review DEA’s Drug Take Back program
•Guidelines for drug storage and disposal
SPEAKERS:
Maryam Tabrizi, DMD, MPH
Dr. Tabrizi received a DMD from Temple University, School of Dentistry, and a master’s degree in Public health from Temple University College of Public Health. She is a certified in Special Care Dentistry, and a Certified Functional Medicine practitioner. Dr. Tabrizi is an Associate Professor at University of Nevada Las Vegas- School of Dental Medicine. She is a recognized geriatric dentist nationally and internationally as a clinician, a researcher with multiple grants, an author, and an educator. She is an advocate for oral health of fragile elderly and individuals with special needs.
Tiffany Lee, DDS
Dr. Lee joined UNLV Dental Medicine June 1, 2022, as a full-time faculty member in the Clinical Sciences department. She earned her DDS and completed her postgraduate prosthodontics certificate program at the University of Southern California Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry, and teaches in our predoctoral degree program.Prior to UNLV, Dr. Lee provided prosthodontic care for the Alaska Native populations and rural communities in Anchorage, and developed digital scanning protocols for rural areas as part of a HRSA (Health Resources & Services Administration) grant. She is a member of the American College of Prosthodontics Academy of Osseo integration, and the American Dental Association.
Steven Saxe, DMD
Dr. Saxe joined UNLV School of Dental Medicine in 2016 as a part-time instructor and has treated patients in Las Vegas for nearly 30 years. Board certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, Dr. Saxe earned his bachelor’s at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree at Washington University School of Dental Medicine in Saint Louis, Missouri. He continued his education at Sinai Hospital of Detroit, completing a four year residency in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. An advocate for organized dentistry, Dr. Saxe has memberships with many local, state, and national professional organizations including the Southern Nevada Dental Society, Nevada Dental Association, and International College of Dentists; is a fellow with three organizations including the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery; a diplomate with two boards including the National Dental Board of Anesthesiology; and serves as president of the Nevada state society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. During his career, he helped found the University of Nevada School of Medicine General Practice Dental Residency, as well as the Southern Nevada Craniofacial and Cleft Palate clinic.
